Rory McIlroy misses Players cut, blames Bryson DeChambeau

Rory McIlroy is out at The Players Championship, and it wasn’t significantly shut.

The golfer missed the lower at TPC Sawgrass by a full 10 strokes, ending the second spherical at 10-over on Friday. It was a brutal couple of days for McIlroy, with the low level approaching a quadruple bogey to finish his first spherical.

The large shock from the 2019 Players champion got here after the second spherical, although, as he revealed a curious motive for his struggles.

From ESPN:

“Probably the swing issues and where it all stems from, probably like October last year, doing a little bit of speed training, started getting sucked into that stuff, swing got flat, long, and too rotational,” he said. “Obviously I added some velocity and am hitting the ball longer, however what that did to my swing as an entire most likely wasn’t factor, so I’m type of preventing to get again out of that. That’s what I’m pissed off with.”

Basically, McIlroy — who’s already one of many PGA Tour’s longest drivers — had been attempting to hit the ball tougher, and it value him elsewhere in his swing.

When requested why he would do such a factor, McIlroy conceded that he was tempted by the success Bryson DeChambeau has seen since adding enough bulk to become the biggest driver on Tour:

“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t anything to do with what Bryson did at the U.S. Open,” McIlroy said of DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open in September at Winged Foot by 6 shots. “I feel lots of people noticed that and had been like, ‘Whoa, if that is the way in which they are going to set golf programs up sooner or later, it helps. It actually helps.’

“The one thing that people don’t appreciate is how good Bryson is out of the rough. Not only because of how upright he is but because his short irons are longer than standard, so he can get a little more speed through the rough than us, than other guys.

“And I believed having the ability to get some extra velocity is an efficient factor, and I perhaps simply — to the detriment a bit of little bit of my swing, I obtained there, however I simply must perhaps rein it again in a bit of bit.”

There is seemingly extra to DeChambeau’s success than including mass. The 2019 U.S. Open champion at the moment sits in a tie for fifth at 6-under at The Players, three strokes again from chief Lee Westwood.

It is true that McIlroy has lately seen main features within the distance division; his common driving distance ranks second to solely DeChambeau among PGA Tour golfers this year and is up greater than six yards from his common in 2019. That enchancment has certainly did not translate to success, nevertheless. McIlroy hasn’t received an occasion because the WGC-HSBC Champions in Nov. 2019

Curiously, it wasn’t errant drivers or irons that value McIlroy probably the most at The Players. Errant drives led to his worst holes, however data golf’s live strokes gained statistics discovered that McIlroy’s placing is the place struggled probably the most. Only two gamers had a worse mark than McIlroy’s -3.21 common, although his mark off the tee, -1.26, wasn’t nice both.
