‘Why not me?’ says PGA leader Conners

Canadian Corey Conners, taking confidence from two top-10 Masters finishes up to now six months, started Thursday’s opening spherical of the PGA Championship figuring any person might seize command.

“I knew in my preparation it was possible to have a decent round, shoot a 5- or 6-under par round,” Conners mentioned.

“So kind of started the day thinking, ‘Why not me?'”

Conners, chasing his first main title, fired a five-under par 67 to grab the 18-hole lead at windy Kiawah Island, what he referred to as his most full spherical of the 12 months.

“It was a really special round. I did a lot of things really well,” Conners mentioned. “I’m really pleased with the score.”

Conners, ranked thirty ninth, was tenth on the Masters final November and eighth at Augusta National final month, when he fired a hole-in-one.

Against the blustery winds of Kiawah’s Ocean Course, Conners holed birdies from 32, 33 and 56 ft in a surprising show at a course that battered most of the world’s high gamers.

“It was really nice to see some mid-range birdie putts fall in the hole. Really gave me confidence,” Conners mentioned. “Felt like I rolled it really well. A lot of putts had chances to go in and I made some nice saves, as well.”

Conners, 29, saved his cool when pressured to play from the sand and dealt with main strain as if it had been greater than his tenth main begin.

“I definitely felt calm out there. It was fun,” he mentioned. “Just trying to play solid golf, and I was able to do that so felt very comfortable, very calm out there.

“You cannot go to sleep on the market on any holes. It’s very difficult. Made it as least irritating as doable on myself. I hit loads of actually good pictures and holed some good putts early within the spherical, and that basically helped increase the boldness. Played with loads of freedom.”

Conners, an NHL Toronto Maple Leafs fan hoping the team can win its first Stanley Cup since 1967, won’t lose sleep to watch them play this week as he concentrates on his own trophy bid.

“No probability of staying up ’til the top of the sport. I’ll be most likely in mattress earlier than the third interval begins,” he said.

Conners is confident it will be worth the sacrifice.

“Definitely I’ve loads of perception in myself, and I’ve been taking part in effectively for fairly some time,” he said. “I’m excited for alternative to play towards the perfect gamers on this planet and put my recreation to the check.

“I have a lot of confidence in my game and I’m excited for the rest of the weekend. Didn’t try to force it to happen but definitely saw myself having a good day and hopefully can keep that up the rest of the weekend.”
